　一方、新華社通信は２４日夜、死者３５人に加えて新たに８人の遺体が見つかったとする英語版の記事を配信したが、王報道官が記者会見で「私が把握している情報は３５人だ」と述べ、報道内容を事実上否定した。負傷者も２１１人と報じられたことに対し、１９２人と説明した。

　事故後、「３５人は訳あり数字だ」と書き込むユーザーがいた。「今回の高速鉄道は３５人死亡。河南省平頂山の炭鉱事故も３５人死亡。重慶市の暴雨による 死者も３５人。雲南省の暴雨被害も死者３５人。『３５』のカラクリを教えよう。実は、死者３６人以上の事故が起きた場合、市の共産党委員会の書記が更迭さ れることになっている。そのため、事故が起きた当初から死亡人数は３５人以下と決まっていた」
